I'm Darra Bishop, founder of minds@work. After nearly a decade designing K-12 learning environments inside LAUSD, I launched minds@work to bring independent FF&E design expertise to schools throughout Los Angeles and Southern California.
minds@work specifies school furniture, fixtures, and equipment based entirely on what's right for your students, your teachers, and your budget. My recommendations aren't tied to any single manufacturer or product line — which means you get the best fit for your school, drawn from across the full market.
Before founding minds@work, I spent the better part of a decade as a consultant inside LAUSD's own furniture design group — the only district in the country with one. Those years gave me an inside view of how schools actually work: the procurement realities, the stakeholder dynamics, and what furniture truly serves students versus what just looks good in a catalog. I launched minds@work to make that expertise available to any school, independently and without bias.
minds@work is an independent K-12 FF&E design consultancy based in Los Angeles. I work with public schools, charter schools, and architecture firms across Southern California — specifying classroom furniture, library furnishings, and learning environment equipment without ties to any manufacturer or vendor.
"Experiencing a school's culture first-hand and having the opportunity to speak to its educators results in successful projects."
— Darra Bishop, founderI visit your school, meet your teachers, and develop detailed 2D space plans tailored to how your classrooms actually function.
minds@work researches, curates, and specifies furniture, fixtures, and equipment — chosen for durability, flexibility, and learning outcomes.
minds@work manages the procurement process end-to-end, coordinating with vendors, tracking orders, and keeping your project on schedule.
I work within your construction timeline, collaborating with architects and design teams to ensure furniture integrates seamlessly.
I create logistical layouts, manage delivery, and oversee installation — so your classrooms are ready when school starts.
I return after occupancy to evaluate how spaces are actually being used — and make refinements that serve your students better.

A dramatic staircase nook transformed into a student lounge — modular seating that encourages impromptu conversation and independent study.
Darra brought a level of attention and care to our project that made every stakeholder — from the principal to the plant manager — feel genuinely heard. The result was spaces that work the way our school actually works.
Never worked with an independent FF&E designer before? Here's what working with minds@work looks like — simple, personal, and school-first.
We come to you, walk your spaces, and talk to your teachers about how they actually teach.
I take time to understand your programs, your students, and what makes your school unique — before designing anything.
Space plans, lookbooks, and furniture selections — all reviewed and approved by your team before anything is ordered.
minds@work specifies, procures, and coordinates — managing the budget and vendor relationships on your behalf.
I coordinate installation, review the finished spaces, and check in after occupancy to make sure everything is working.
I step in where architectural scope ends. Before launching minds@work, I spent 6.5 years as a consultant inside LAUSD's internal FF&E design group — giving me firsthand knowledge of CD timelines, procurement realities, and how to work within your process, not around it. Every project includes full 2D space plans, material palettes, and a lookbook approved by the school before a single order is placed.
